Utah Tax Incentives for Film Makers

UtahOutlineTraditionally the film industry has been focused in California and New York because those were the states that offered the best tax breaks for film makers, but in the last fourteen years many states have increased their incentives for film makers to set up shop in their state.

In fact, according to the National Conference for State Legislatures there are now 39 states that offer film production incentives, this is way up from the early 2000s when only a few states offered incentives.

Utah in particular has been aggressively pursuing film productions in our state, spurred on by the popular Utah based Sundance Film Festival and new Film Studios in Park City.

As Utah seeks to create a strong film culture, they offer some amazing incentives for filming in Utah. If your film production spends $200,000 in Utah while filming, you are eligible to receive a rebate of 20% of every dollar you spend in the state of Utah for your production. That rebate jumps to 25% when your production exceeds $1,000,000 in expenses in Utah.

There are also sales tax exemptions in Utah for the purchase of equipment and for hotel stays that will exceed 30 days. You can look into the Utah Motion Picture Incentive Fund by contacting the Utah Film Commission

Tax Incentives like the one offered in Utah and other states can help you stretch your film budget. If you need help funding you film to start with, please contact us, we will help you get started right, with the money you need to make an incredible film, through a crowd sourcing campaign.
