Do you have an excellent short story that you want to make into an indie film? If you’re planning to re-work your story to fit a script, you’ll need to know a few things first. A screenplay is much different than a novel or short story, as it contains stage directions and isn’t meant to be read as a finished product. Let’s look at some tips to help you successfully convert your short story to a screenplay.
Make Sure It’s Adaptable
The first thing you need to know before you start your new screenplay is whether or not your story meets the right criteria to make a good script. Your short story must have at least one character who goes on a journey and changes. The change doesn’t have to be good, but it has to be there. The hero of your story must face conflict and have a villain. Conflicts should become more harsh until the story reaches its climax. Also make sure your story has a genre that will attract an audience when it becomes a screenplay.
Make An Outline
Now that you’ve established your short story will make a good screenplay, it’s time to write an outline. An outline of your story is necessary in order to make sure you’ll be able to create a good script. Break your story down into a series of events, as simply as you can. Then work on dividing these events into acts and scenes as you desire.
Take Sound Into Account
There is no sound in a short story. But a screenplay will be performed with sound, so make sure you take that into account when converting. Edit dialogue so that it flows smoothly and add in background sounds to describe the setting in your script.
Cut Scenes That Don’t Work
Some scenes won’t translate well to your script and will need to be removed. For example, internal monologues don’t do well in screenplays. In a short stories, these are fine because you have access to the character’s inner thoughts. But screenplays are about action and you don’t often get to hear what a character is thinking. Stick to scenes and dialogue that convey the main meat of the plot and discard any that you don’t need.
Do some research on screenplay formatting before you get started trying to turn your story into a script.
